UPFORCRABS

Utilizing protein from overpopulated resource of crabs

Goal

UPFORCRABS will focus on proving that crabs can be used as a viable and sustainable protein source for animal feed, while showing that the whole value chain can benefit from making use of this underutilized resource.

In short, the marine ecosystems are suffering due to an overabundance of crabs, while the terrestrial ecosystems and climate suffer due to the global need for protein rich animal feed. UPFORCRABS will prove that a sustainable business can be made, while solving both of these problems.

Plan

The project involves the following overall working points:
Construction of a scalable pilot plant

  • IPR
  • Feed development
  • Animal feed trials
  • Supply-chain testing and validation
  • Protein extraction research and development
  • Field-trials with fisheries
  • Field-trials at farms.

The plan will be executed over a two-year period, whereafter Decameal and partners will be ready for the next step in scaling towards becoming a viable feed ingredient supplier.

Expected results

The expected results are a fully proven pilot plant, with all necessary approvals, IPR’s secured, and a production capacity able to deliver the quantities needed to enter the feed industry.

The project will also result in developed logistics around crab fishing and handling, along with incorporation of Decameal products into several different feeds across the feed sector.

The project is expected to prove that everyone in the value chain, from ocean to farm, can benefit from Decameals products and impacts.
