Zero Emission Fertiliser Project.

Goal:

The aim of the project is to develop and test strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the use of fertiliser and manure.
More than half of the carbon footprint of Danish crop production relates to the production and use of fertiliser and manure. The aim of the project is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from fertiliser and manure by 60%, contributing to the overall goal to reduce the carbon footprint of Danish crops by 35% in 2030.

Plan:

The project is the first part of a five-year project.
An emissions data platform will be developed for calculating, storing and sharing gas emission data and metadata from field trials and monitoring this and other projects.
Three field trials will document greenhouse gas emissions from clover grass, maize and wheat fields and test technologies for reducing emissions. The emission data platform will be used to analyse the data.
Drivers of emissions and potential mitigation strategies will be investigated, including suitable biochar types, pre-treatments and combinations.
The project will also establish international collaborations and partnerships to ensure knowledge, results and products resulting from the project can be applied across markets.

Expected results:

The project will lay the foundations for the large-scale development, documentation and modelling of strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the production and use of fertiliser and manure in the second phase of the five-year project.
The project’s emissions data platform will enable national standardisation of gas measurement, supporting international collaboration in this field..
