AlgaeVita

Eco-efficient production of biofortified algae-based ingredients rich in vitamin D3 and omega-3 fatty acid

Goal

  • Develop an eco-efficient processing concept using green technologies
  • Produce high-quality, sustainable microalgae-based ingredients rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/eicosapentaenoic acid) and vitamin D3.
  • Include downstream processing, in-line vitamin D3 biofortification, and assessing residual biomass utilization for innovative applications

Plan

  • Establish a reliable process line for cultivating and processing Nannochloropsis oceanica.
  • Implement UV treatment for in-line vitamin D3 biofortification during biomass production and post-extraction.
  • Extract and characterize algae oil using supercritical CO2 (Sc-CO2) extraction.
  • Assess market potential and prepare documentation for Novel Food approval.
  • Collaborate with Danish microalgae producers for technology transfer and large-scale implementation

Expected results

  • Production of vitamin D3-rich microalgae oil and protein-rich residual biomass.
  • Development of scalable, eco-efficient processing technologies.
  • Successful Novel Food approval for biofortified algae-based products.
  • Enhanced market potential for sustainable, plant-based omega-3 and vitamin D3 sources
