AgriFoodTure Denmark-Netherlands Bilateral Call:
Driving Sustainable Health and Nutrition
– Innovations in Plant-Rich Foods and Consumer Engagement

AgriFoodTure and Roadmap Food, Health & Living Environment (Netherlands) are pleased to launch a bilateral call to support collaborative research and innovation projects between Danish and Dutch partners.

This bilateral call invites consortia with partners from both countries to work together on advancing plant-rich diets to achieve sustainability, public health, and climate objectives. By leveraging complementary expertise and strengths in Denmark and the Netherlands, the call aims to accelerate transformative solutions in the agri-food system.

All project proposals must include both Danish and Dutch partners. Each funding agency will finance its respective national partners, adhering to their guidelines and funding regulations.

Thematic Focus

Projects must contribute to one or both of the following themes:

  • Theme 1: Development of Nutritious, Sustainable Plant-Rich Products
Focus on nutritional quality, health benefits, and consumer acceptance. Projects may involve innovations in product development (taste, texture, nutrition), alternative proteins, and health-promoting bioactive compounds.
  • Theme 2: Public Awareness of Healthy Sustainable Diets via Effective Consumer Engagement and Education
Explore effective strategies such as communication campaigns, behavioral nudges, pricing and placement techniques, and educational initiatives to promote the adoption of plant-rich and hybrid diets.

The transition to plant-rich diets is a key driver for reducing the environmental footprint of food production.

AgriFoodTure and Roadmap Food, Health & Living Environment aim to catalyse this shift by supporting projects that conduct research to understand consumer barriers and motivations, develop strategies to foster behavior change, and create sustainable and healthy food environments, invest in R&D to improve taste, texture and the nutritional profile of plant-rich products and their effects on human health.

Enhanced consumer acceptance will drive market demand for plant-rich alternatives, further accelerating the transition to a more sustainable and resilient agri-food system.

This call emphasizes the urgent need to bridge the innovation gap in the health and nutrition aspects of plant-rich foods for fostering widespread consumer adoption and prevent diet-related diseases. By improving the nutritional quality of plant-rich products, healthier and more sustainable diets can be promoted. This will help shift global consumer behavior.

Expected outcomes of projects

  • Strengthened collaboration: Enhance the national and international impact of Denmark and the Netherlands while fostering mutual learning and synergies across borders.
  • Increased consumer acceptance: Develop innovative strategies and solutions to promote healthy plant-rich diets in Denmark and the Netherlands, addressing cultural, social economic and market-specific barriers.
  • Market development: Identify and expand domestic and international markets for healthy, sustainable, plant-rich food products, driving economic growth and export opportunities.
  • Value chain collaboration: Enhance collaboration across the entire value chain to enable and promote dietary changes.
  • GHG reduction: Achieve measurable reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by shifting to sustainable dietary patterns.
  • Improved public health outcomes: Address diet-related chronic diseases by promoting healthier and more sustainable food options, including improvements to the food environment.
